How to upgrade your Joomla

By Antti Haverinen Jul 27th, 2007

There are few tips for upgrading Joomla easily (Joomla doesn´t allow upgrade just pressing Upgrade button that is quite strange) on the Web. So that why I wrote this note to remember the upgrading process in future. Because of bugs and security fixes we need to do this procedure. It is useful way to watch the need of upgrading by clicking Check for newer version in back-end regularly.1) Backup your files and databases in cPanel just for ensuring your important files. Then click the Check for newer version in back-end of your Joomla. This enables you to see Latest release on Joomla.org-site. Follow Download-link by pressing it.

2) Upgrading means that you need to overwrite old files with new patch-files. So you need to download proper Patch Package. For example I need to catch patch file “Joomla_1.0.11_to_1.0.12-Stable-Patch_Package.tar.gz” because the current version is 1.0.11 and there is a new version 1.0.12.
Good Tip for You

3) After downloading the file, go again to the cPanel and its File Manager and upload the package from your computer into installation folder of your Joomla. In right folder you can see configuration.php-file (so called root folder)

4) In cPanel you can extract zip-files by clicking the uploaded file and then pressing link  Extract File Contents on your right upper corner of  File manager.
How about this?

5) If everything went fine, you upgraded Joomla for newer version. Check this repeating Check for newer version in backend of your Joomla.
